Interested in meal prepping? Ask yourself a few important questions first.

  1. Do I have time throughout the week to prepare a home cooked meal every night?
  2. Do I have time on the weekend to devote an entire afternoon or evening to cooking?
  3. Do I like leftovers?
  4. Do I have room for copious amounts of Tupperware?

If you answered no to number 1, then perhaps meal prepping can be an experiment for you. It’s worth a try as meal prepping does have some great benefits.

  • It can keep you eating healthy. You might be unexpectedly home late one evening, but you can skip the emergency trip to the pizza parlor or Chinese take out as dinner will already be prepared.
  • It can help you stay on top of your macros. You can calorie count and macro count as you’re prepping your week’s worth of food, eliminating on the fly guesswork or estimation as you go throughout the week.
  • It can help you save time and money. If you write up recipes before you grocery shop it may make your shopping experience more efficient and perhaps less expensive.

Answered no to 2, 3, or 4?  Well, then meal prepping might not be for you.   If the thought of eating something that has been in your fridge for anywhere from 2 to 5 days makes your stomach jump, then typical meal prepping may not be for you.

If this is the case, you can still easily guide your diet and accomplish the second and third bullets from above, but you’ll have to manage your time well throughout the week.  Write up recipes before heading to the local food store, and keep a log somewhere visible with your weekly meal ideas.  Make sure to mix them up so that you have some easy to make meals, in case you do run late a few nights, and some other more elaborate meals so that you can go all out if you get the cooking itch.
